Devastating flash floods in the Nepal-Tibet border region have killed at least 675 people, Nepali police said on Saturday (August 29, 2026). Chinese state media earlier confirmed seven deaths on the Tibetan side. Nearly 3,000 stranded people, including 163 foreigners, were evacuated by rescue teams in Nepal as search and relief operations continued for a fourth day.
Nepal's meteorology department warned of fresh rainfall and thunderstorms in the flash flood-affected areas on Saturday, threatening to disrupt ongoing rescue efforts. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities stated that the threat of a glacial lake bursting near the border has decreased. Satellite images from Thursday to Saturday morning suggest that water in the lake—formed at the confluence of two rivers—has been slowly draining, gradually reducing the reservoir level, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing the Water Resources Ministry.
According to the Nepal Army's Public Relations Directorate, 2,465 people have been evacuated so far, including 163 foreigners (113 Indians, 26 Chinese, 15 South Koreans, 4 Germans, 2 each from Italy and the U.S., and 1 Omani national). Additionally, 191 workers were rescued from tunnels at various hydropower projects in Trishuli and Rasuwa.
Nepal needs $4 billion to $5 billion for rebuilding after the devastating floods, Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle stated. "This is just an estimate. Loss and damage is still being assessed,” he said. More than NPR 2.295 billion has been collected for the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund (PMDRF) as of Friday night (August 29, 2026), with deposits made to accounts across 10 commercial banks.
